How to download KIS Desktop
- Open the Software Release Email sent to you by Simple TAX and click on the link or go to https://simpletaxsupport,com
- Scroll down the page and click on the purple button on the Keep It Simple icon
- Click on the DOWNLOAD CENTER button on the KIS Desktop icon.
- Enter the download password that is in the Software Release email you received from Simple TAX Support and click SUBMIT.
NOTE: Password in the Software Release Email looks like this
- If you do not have the password, please call Simple TAX Support at 281-833-9300 option 2.
- Select the year you want to download (example 2019) and click the DOWNLOAD 2019 button.
- You will then choose where you want to save the software on your computer and click SAVE. (We recommend you save it to your Desktop.)
- The software will then download and the KIS Desktop software icon will show on your Desktop.

The objective of this article is to walk you through on how to share the software from your server to a workstation.
- Open the File Explorer Folder and click on the Windows (C:) folder.
- From the Windows (C:) folder select and open the STServices folder
- Right click on the name of the software year you wish to share to bring up the menu, for example STS2019.
- Select GIVE ACCESS TO or SHARE WITH and from the drop-down menu select SPECIFIC PEOPLE.
- The Network Access window will open and from the drop-down box select EVERYONE and then click the ADD button.
- You will see EVERYONE is added to the list of names underneath and the Permission level will be Read. Click on the down arrow next to Read and select READ/WRITE.
- Click SHARE.
- Finally click DONE once the file has been shared.
How to Install the Keep It Simple Software to a Stand Alone Computer
The objective of this article is to walk you through on how to install desktop to a stand alone computer.
- Once you have downloaded the software, run it
- The Keep It Simple Setup window will open, and you will click the NEXT button at the bottom of the setup window.
- Accept the Terms & Conditions and click NEXT
- On the Choose Destination Location it shows you that KIS Desktop will automatically save to the C: Drive, click NEXT.
- Since you are installing to only one computer in your office, you will select STANDALONE COMPONENTS, and click the NEXT button at the bottom of the setup window.
- Once again you will click on the NEXT button at the bottom of the setup window.
- Now click on the INSTALL button at the bottom of the setup window and let the software install itself onto your main computer.
- Once it installs to your computer click the button that says FINISH at the bottom of the setup window.
- You will now see the InstallShield Wizard Window, please click OK.
- Now look on the main screen of your computer and the Keep It Simple icon will be on there labelled STS2019 (for tax year 2019).
- Click on the icon to open the software and continue the setup.
- Stand Alone Computer will already be selected, now click on the button at the lower right corner labeled SAVE CONFIGURATION.
- For customers with returns in the prior year software, if you would like to import them to the current year please select YES and enter your ADMIN ACCOUNT NAME and PASSWORD. If you do not have returns in the prior year or do not wish to import them, please select NO and click the blue button labeled SAVE & CONTINUE at the lower right corner.
- Answer the question “Do you want to use the account information you have already setup?’ In most cases the account information has already been setup for you via the KIS Online software so please select YES and enter the LOGIN INFORMATION you used to login to the KIS ONLINE software and click on the button at the lower right side labeled DOWNLOAD SITE CONFIGURATION.
- You have successfully installed the software onto your computer.

- Once it installs to your computer click the button that says FINISH at the bottom of the setup window.
- You will now see the InstallShield Wizard Window, please click OK.
- Now look on the main screen of your computer and the Keep It Simple icon will be on there labelled STS2019 (for tax year 2019).
- Click on the icon to open the software and continue the setup.
- Stand Alone Computer will already be selected, so make sure you select Network Software instead. Now click on the icon labeled GET SERVER
- In the SERVER CONFIGURATION enter the name of your Server/Main Computer and check the box that says “Check here if you do not have a Username or Password for Windows” and click OK.
- Once all categories say SUCCESS, click CLOSE.
- A new window will appear called the Network Location For Storage, click on tie SAVE button at the bottom of the window.
- Click on the button at the lower right corner labeled SAVE CONFIGURATION.

Installing KIS Check printing software for KIS Online
- Login to your Keep It Simple Online account.
- Once in your account, go to the Setup Tab.
- At the bottom right corner click on Support.
- Click on the icon labeled Links.
- There will be a link to download Check Printing Software. Click on the link.
- NOTE: If the link is not available call 281-833-9300 option 2 for Support.
- Select where you want to save the Check Printing Software and click SAVE.
- Once the software downloads, click on the download to open.
- Click on the file named Check Print Pro to open.
- In the Check Print Pro Welcome screen, click NEXT.
- Agree to the terms by checking the box Yes, I agree with the terms of this license agreement, and select NEXT.
- On the Destination folder screen, select NEXT.
- On the Ready to Install the Program screen, select INSTALL.
- On the Installation Complete screen, select FINISH.
- Once the check printing software has successfully installed it will place an icon on your desktop. Close the installation screen and select this icon to open up the software.
- The Account Name, Password and Firm Name are the same login information used to access your online software Enter your account information and select LOGIN.
- A warning will generate starting you have not entered your check stock yet. Select OK

The easiest way to transfer SimpleTAX 1040 data to a different computer is to back up the applicable XLink folder on one computer and then restore it to the other computer.
Important We do not recommend this method if you’ve already created tax returns on the computer you want to transfer the SimpleTAX 1040 data to.
How to back up all SimpleTAX 1040 data
- Insert a removable media into your computer – for example, a flash drive, thumb drive, etc.
- In My Computer, browse to the drive where you installed the SimpleTAX 1040 program you want to transfer to a different computer.
- Right-click the XlinkYY folder, where YY is the last two digits of the year of SimpleTAX 1040 you want to back up, and then click Copy.
- In Windows Explorer, browse to the removable media drive and then click Paste on the Edit menu.
How to restore all SimpleTAX 1040 data
- Install SimpleTAX 1040 on the computer where you want to restore the SimpleTAX 1040 data.
- Insert the removable media into your computer.
- In My Computer, browse to the removable media drive.
- Right-click the applicable Xlink data folder and then click Copy.
- Browse to the drive where you installed Simple Tax 1040.
- On the Edit menu in Windows Explorer, click Paste.
- When the Confirm File Replace dialog appears, click Yes.

- Click the File Explorer icon found on the taskbar. (or click the Windows Icon in the taskbar and select Computer from the menu)
- In the left menu, Click This PC.
- Under Devices and Drives, Double Click your hard drive. typically Windows (C:) or Local Disk (C:)

Having a Simple Tax 1040 shortcut on your desktop is quick and convenient way to access the program. When you install Simple Tax 1040, Setup adds a shortcut to your desktop. If you accidentally delete it, you can create a new one.
To create a new desktop shortcut, follow these steps:
- In My Computer, locate the following folder, where drive is the drive where the program is installed and YY is the year of the program that would like create a desktop shortcut for: drive:\XLINKYY
- Right-click the application file XLINK32.exe,
- Point to Send To and then click Desktop (create shortcut).
- The shortcut will now be available on your computer’s desktop. If desired, you can rename the shortcut by right-clicking the newly created desktop shortcut and then clicking Rename.
